Photographs of the last light. Start when you are ready, and the day will fall on its own.

Chapter two

What is left after it goes

Most people pack up when the light dies. That is when I start. Everything below was shot after the sun had already gone.

A small white lighthouse at blue hour, its lamp burning orange against a deep blue sky full of cloud.

Chapter three

Small things, same light

I am not loyal to a subject. A canola field and a kiwi under a coloured gel are the same problem, which is where the light is and what it is doing.

About the dark ones

Shadows keep their detail

The most common complaint about cheap prints is that dark pictures come back as one flat black mass. Half my best photographs are dark. So the blue hour and night images go on a paper chosen for shadow depth, and I proof every single one by eye before it ships. If there is detail in a shadow, you will see the detail.

  • It ships insured, in a rigid tube, with corner guards.
  • If it arrives damaged, send me a photo and I make it again.
  • Thirty days. If it is wrong for the room, send it back and I refund it.

Start to finish

Three steps and it is on your wall

  1. A boardwalk path curving away between tall trees.

    01

    Pick the photograph.

Anything in the gallery, or anything in the journey at the top. If you want something you saw and cannot find, ask me.

  2. A single oak leaf resting on sunlit snow.

    02

    Pick the size.

Three print sizes, one large edition, or just the file. If you are unsure, tell me the wall and I will tell you which one fits it.

  3. Water droplets on a leaf, each catching the light.

    03

I make it and send it.

Files arrive instantly. Prints take five to seven days to make and proof, then they post from Canada with tracking.

Journal

Notes from the waiting

Most of the job is standing still in the dark. These are the nights that were worth it.

Twelve minutes of nothing, then one strike

A dark city skyline at night with lightning showing inside cloud beside a balcony railing.

The camera sat on the balcony rail for a long time before anything happened. Down below the city kept all its lights on like nothing was coming.

The sky went purple twice and gave me nothing both times. Most of what I shot that night is a black rectangle, and that is normal. Lightning does not negotiate. There is no version of this where you get it on the first frame.

Then the cloud opened somewhere behind the building and lit its own edge from the inside. It was finished before I registered that it had started.

That is the whole job. You stand in the dark, you stay ready, and once in a while the light comes to you.

Who is holding the camera

Malek Larif

I shoot landscapes, wildlife, cities, and things smaller than a coin, which is more than most photographers will admit to. The reason is simple. I am not loyal to a subject. I am loyal to the light, and the light turns up in a canola field, a jellyfish tank, and a balcony in the middle of a thunderstorm.

Everything on this site is mine. I took it, I edited it, I print it, and I am the one who puts it in the box.

Before you buy

The things people actually ask

Fair. You are buying something you will look at every day, so guessing is not good enough. Every photograph on this site is shown large and uncompressed, so what you see is what the file is. And there is a thirty day return, so if it lands on the wall and it is wrong, it goes back and you get your money.

That is the right thing to worry about, and it is why cheap print shops get bad reviews. Dark work needs a paper with shadow depth and a proof checked by eye. Both happen here on every dark print, one at a time.

One JPEG at the largest size that photograph exists in, up to 6000 by 4000 pixels, saved at full quality once and never resaved. You get it in sRGB for screens and Adobe RGB for labs. It arrives by email straight after payment.

A 6000 pixel wide file is sharp to about 20 inches on the long edge at 300 dots per inch, which is the standard for close viewing. Go bigger and it still works, because a large print gets looked at from further away. If you want a specific size, tell me and I will tell you honestly whether that photograph can carry it.

It ships insured, in a rigid tube, with guards on the corners. If it turns up hurt anyway, send me a photo and I make you another one. You do not pay twice.

Because they are all one person's eye and you can see it. Same light, same patience, thirty odd frames across landscape, wildlife, macro and night. Prints are signed and numbered by hand. Ask me about any photograph here and I will tell you where I was standing.

Files arrive instantly. Signed prints take five to seven days to make and proof, then they post from Canada with tracking. The large edition takes a little longer because it is checked twice.

Often yes. Tell me the wall and the photograph. I will tell you whether that file can carry the size and what it costs. If it cannot, I will say so.

Yes. International orders ship insured. Duties and taxes, if any, are the buyer's responsibility and depend on where you live.

Still deciding

Tell me the wall

If you cannot pick a size, or you want a photograph at a size that is not listed, write to me. I answer everything myself.

NO LIST. NO FORWARDING. JUST ME.

Or just buy the print
